American carrier Delta to resume flights to Israel

24.01.2025

Airline says resuming Tel Aviv-New York route in April after a two-year suspension; Other major airlines, including Air France, Lufthansa, and British Airways, gradually returning to Israel, signaling a slow recovery for international air travel

Delta Airlines is making its comeback to Israel, with tickets now available for flights on the Tel Aviv-New York route starting in April. This marks the airline’s first return to Israel since flights were halted during the war in October 2023.

While Delta has not officially announced its return, the ticket sales speak for themselves. Prices, however, are far from budget-friendly. A search for flights departing April 10, just ahead of Passover, shows round-trip tickets starting at $1,868, including baggage. For travelers looking to fly in May, prices climb slightly, starting at $1,944.

The skies over Israel are gradually becoming busier as more foreign airlines announce their return. Air France, the country's national carrier, will resume daily flights on its Paris-Tel Aviv route starting on Saturday, with plans to increase the frequency in the coming months. Its low-cost subsidiary, Transavia France, will also resume flights to Israel on January 28.

The Lufthansa Group, which includes airlines such as Swiss, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, and Eurowings, is also preparing to relaunch its Tel Aviv operations. Flights are set to resume gradually, starting February 1, 2025.

British Airways is rejoining the fold as well, with service to Tel Aviv scheduled to resume on April 5. Initially, the airline will operate one daily flight between Tel Aviv and London, increasing to two daily flights by April 20.

Low-cost heavyweight Ryanair announced it will return to Israel just in time for the summer season, reinstating its full flight schedule to and from the country. Ryanair hasn’t landed at Ben Gurion Airport since February 2024.

Wizz Air, another popular budget carrier, has already expanded its operations in Israel. It recently launched new routes connecting Tel Aviv to cities like Abu Dhabi, Rome, Milan, London, Warsaw, Krakow, and Budapest. Until now, the airline had only operated flights to Larnaca.

Other airlines are also preparing for their return. ITA Airways, Italy’s national carrier, will restart flights to Israel on February 1, while easyJet will resume service on June 1, 2025.

However, not all airlines are rushing back. American Airlines has suspended flights to Israel until at least the end of September 2025, while United Airlines has postponed its return indefinitely. Air Canada has canceled all flights until the end of March, and Air India’s suspension will last until February 2025. Virgin Atlantic isn’t planning to resume operations until October 2025, and KLM has delayed its flights until March 2025. Air Baltic and Iberia Express have also pushed back their return to Israel, with flights suspended until February and March, respectively.

Despite these delays, several airlines continue to serve Israel, ensuring essential connectivity. These include Bulgaria Air (Sofia), Ethiopian Airlines (Addis Ababa), Flydubai (Dubai), Uzbekistan Airways (Tashkent), TAROM (Bucharest), TUS Airways (Larnaca), Aegean Airlines (Athens), Air Europa (Madrid), Air Seychelles (Seychelles), Azerbaijan Airlines (Baku), and Smartwings (Prague).
