If you’re looking for a place where Israel sheds its desert image and puts on a lush, European-style coat, the Alonei Aba Nature Reserve is your destination. Located in the lower Galilee, this isn't just a patch of woods—it's a living relic of what the region looked like centuries ago.

Here is a unique look at why this reserve is a hidden gem:

1. The "Galilean Savannah"

Alonei Aba is famous for its Tabor Oak forest. Unlike the dense, tangled pine forests planted across much of Israel in the 20th century, this is an open, airy woodland. The massive, gnarled oaks stand spaced apart, creating a landscape that feels more like a scenic savannah than a dark forest. In the spring, the ground between these giants explodes into a carpet of anemones and cyclamens.

2. A Walk Through Templar History

The reserve is named after Abba Berdichev, a Jewish paratrooper, but the neighboring village of Alonei Aba (formerly Waldheim) tells a different story. It was founded by German Templars in 1907.

 The Vibe: You can still see the distinct stone houses and the Gothic-style church.

Winter/Spring: It’s a neon-green wonderland. The air is damp, the moss is thick, and the flowers are out in force.

Summer/Autumn: It turns into a golden, cinematic landscape. The dry grass and the silver-green leaves of the oaks give it a rugged, Mediterranean "Wild West" feel.

На стоянке делают очень вкусный мандариновый сок. Через дорогу старая немецкая колония с интересными домами под черепичными крышами. В колонии сохранилась столетняя церковь, собирают деньги на восстановление. На карте указано, что это синагога.

A beautiful forest, an excellent place for a short hike on a weekend, a circular route for 1.5 - 2 hours. Cows walk in the forest, colorful lizards run around, goats and sheep graze on their own. After winter there are many different flowers and bushes. The forest is mostly oak, you can catch your breath from the city.

They make very tasty tangerine juice in the parking lot.

Across the road is an old German colony with interesting houses under tiled roofs. A hundred-year-old church has been preserved in the colony; money is being collected for restoration. The map indicates that this is a synagogue.
